What Do Private School Admissions Committees Look For

The private school admissions process can be quite long and taxing. Applicants and their parents must tour schools, go on interviews, take admissions tests,  and fill out applications. During the entire process, applicants and their parents often wonder what admissions committees are actually looking for. Though each school is different, there are some major criteria that admissions committees want to see in successful applicants.   Academic and Intellectual Interests For admission to the older grades (middle school  and high school), private school admissions committees will look at the applicant’s grades, but they also consider other elements of academic success and academic potential. Application sections including teacher recommendations, the students own essay, and ISEE or SSAT scores  are all also considered in the final admission decisions. These components combined help the admission committee determine what the academic strengths of a student are, and where the student may need some extra assistance, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. Many private schools are interested in knowing where a student needs extra assistance in order to transform the learning experience. Private schools are known for helping students perform to their fullest potential. Younger Students For younger students who are applying to pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, schools may look at ERB tests, which are modified intelligence tests. Teacher recommendations are also very important for the younger students, as well as what students are like during their school visits. Admission officers may observe the child in the classroom, or ask teachers for reports on how the child behaved and if she was able to get along with other students.   In addition to the application materials mentioned previously, the admissions committee is also looking for evidence that the applicant is genuinely interested in learning, reading, and other intellectual pursuits. In the interview, they may ask the child about what he reads or what he likes to study in school. The answer is not as important as the genuine interest the child shows in learning—inside and outside of school. If the child has a compelling interest, he should be prepared to speak about it in the interview and to explain why it means something to him. Older Students Applicants to the older grades in high school or in the postgraduate year  should show that they have taken advanced coursework in an area of interest, if available to them, and that they are committed to taking this kind of classwork at their new school.   In the instance that a student is underperforming at her current school, explanations of why are always helpful, as well as information about what the candidate needs to excel. Being able to articulate where a learning environment is lacking is helpful to admission committees. If the child is in this position, the parent might consider asking to reclassify the child, meaning repeat a grade. At a private school, this is a common request, as the often rigorous academics can be challenging for students who are underprepared. If reclassification isnt right, a parent might also inquire about academic support programs, where students work closely with a qualified educator who can help them learn how to capitalize on strengths and develop coping mechanisms and strategies for areas where they arent as strong. Extracurricular Interests Applicants to older grades should show interest in an activity outside of the classroom, whether it’s sports, music, drama, publications, or another activity. They should research what the options to participate in this activity are at the school they are applying to, and they should be prepared to speak about this interest in the interview and how they will further it. Its also OK to be unsure about what the student wants to try, as a private school is a great way to get involved in new activities and sports. Students will be expected to get involved in something other than traditional academics, so the desire to be a part of a team or group is crucial. This does not mean that parents should run out and sign their child up for numerous activities. In fact, some private schools are wary of candidates who are overinvolved and overscheduled. Committee members are likely to ask: Will they be able to handle the rigors of private school? Will they be constantly late for school, leave early, or take excessive time off because of other commitments?   Character and Maturity Schools are looking for students who are going to be positive members of the private school community.  Admission committees want students who are openminded, curious, and caring.  Private schools often pride themselves on having supportive, inclusive communities, and they want students who will contribute.   Boarding schools  are particularly looking for a high level of independence or desire to become more independent, as students are expected to be responsible for themselves at school. Maturity comes into play when students can articulate a desire to improve, grow, and be involved at school. This is important for admission committees to see. If the child doesnt want to be at the school, committee members typically dont want the child, either. In addition, admissions committees may  look for evidence of the student’s having participated in public service, but this isnt a requirement for most schools. The committee also looks at teacher comments to ensure that the applicant is the type of student who works well with classmates and teachers. Students can also show maturity through holding positions of leadership at their current schools or by leading extracurricular activities, sports teams, or community service programs. Fit With the School Admissions committees look for students who are a good fit. They want to accept kids who will do well at the school and who will find it easy to fit in with the school culture. For example, they are more likely to accept applicants who know about the school, its mission, its classes, and its offerings. They are less likely to accept a student who doesn’t know much about the school or who isn’t interested in the school’s mission. For example, if the school is a single-sex school, the admissions committee is looking for students who are knowledgeable about single-sex schools because they are more likely to be interested in having this type of education. Some schools readily accept applicants who have siblings at the school, as these applicants and their families already know a lot about the school and are committed to its culture and goals. An educational consultant can help the applicant and his family understand which schools might fit the student best, or applicants can look over a school during the tour and interview to get a better sense of whether it is right for them. Supportive Parents Parents can actually have an impact on their childs candidacy at a private school. Many schools will interview the parents, as they want to get to know them. Admissions committees will likely ask: Are you going to be involved in your childs education and be a partner with the school?Will you be supportive of your student, but also supportive in terms of enforcing the expectations of the school? Some schools have denied students who are perfectly qualified to attend but whose parents are concerning. Overinvolved parents, parents who feel entitled or, on the flip side, parents who are removed and not supportive of their children can be negative influences on the school community. Teachers have demanding jobs already, and parents who may pose a concern for the school by being needy or demanding can result in a student being rejected for admission.   Genuine Candidates Private schools do not want a perfect mold of the ideal student. They want real students who bring with them a wealth of interests, perspectives, opinions, and cultures. Private schools want people who are involved, real, and authentic. If a childs application and interview are too perfect, it could raise a red flag that makes the committee question if she is truly the individual being presented to the school. Parents should not coach their child to be perfect or hide facts about himself or his family that could affect his ability to be successful in school. If a parent knows that a child struggles in an area, they should not hide it. In fact, many private schools offer programs aimed at supporting students in need of assistance, so being open and honest can benefit the child and help a parent find the right school. Presenting a false representation of the child could result in the school being unable to serve her needs, meaning that the child is at a disadvantage. It could also mean that the offer of acceptance would be rescinded for the coming year, or worse, the child may be asked to leave before the end of the current school year, forfeit tuition payments, and possibly pay the remainder of tuition for the year. Honesty is always the best policy here.

Answer: Group communication Group communication refers to any kind of interpersonal communication that takes place among a group of 3 or more people. We all come across group communications very frequently in our personal as well as professional lives. Group communication is highly important as it brings about effective coordination in a group as well as leads to a transparent flow of information (Brink Costigan, 2015). During all my previous experiences in group communication, I noticed various conflicts. These conflicts occur because different people come together to work. This course has been an immense learning experience for me. I have understood the importance of being patient and allowing everyone to participate rather than simply being concerned with my personal point of view. I have always had strong opinions on subjects and issues. Therefore I tend to become aggressive during group communications. I have also been given the feedback that I dont allow everyone to speak but continue to focus on my point. Through this course, I have learnt that I must change this habit and become more polite yet assertive. Respect for other team members is very important in a group communication (Karanges, Johnston, Beatson Lings, 2015). I have also learnt that communication can be a onetime event but what is important is to build a deep and meaningful relationship with the people while communicating with them. This will also ensure that conflicts are also being resolved patiently and effectively. When I begin my career in any organization, I am sure I will face various opportunities and situations which would require me to work with different teams. I am sure my learnings from this course will help me in my professional life by improving my communication skills. Group communication is also very important to ensure that organizational tasks assigned to the group are achieved more effectively. If the group does not communicate effectively, then it will be difficult for them to work together. This will not only impact their performance but will also adversely impact the organizational culture and environment. Group communications can often lead to conflicts. This is predominantly because every group communication requires an honest communication and an equal participation from all the group members. It is imperative that all the important information is circulated to every person in the group. Therefore the means of communication must be mutually decided. I also learnt that people of a group must encourage everyone to have an equal participation in the group. People in a group must make sure that they use simple language and vocabulary that is understandable to all. The group should also follow an open feedback mechanism where every person in the group can provide an honest feedback to any person from the group. Everyone must also be encouraged to take these feedbacks constructively. When I look back, I have been a part of various group communications. Today, I am sure that if I were a part of any group communication, I would learn from my experiences of the past and ensure that my communications are more effective and transparent. I will also be a lot more patient and listen carefully to other team members with due respect for their opinions and point of views. Now when I engage in group communications with my friends I try to apply my learnings from this course. I also try to be better prepared for a communication by having enough subject knowledge. I also have one question about the course. There are few people who by nature extremely introvert. They may have brilliant insights but they often shy away from communicating. How can I encourage them to speak and make them feel comfortable to speak in a group? Overall my experience in this course has been that of immense learning and growth and I am sure that the lessons from this course will continue to help and guide me through my future endeavors. Organizational communication Organizational communication involves any kind of communication that takes place within the organization. This is important to all organizations. Organizational communications is effectively used to transfer information throughout the business, manage employee relationships, set organizational goals, convey organizational duties responsibilities and provide feedback to employees (Shockley-Zalabak, 2014). Organizational communication plays a very important role in managing organizational conflicts as well as ensuring the right expectation setting between the employee and the employer. Through this course I have learnt a lot of things about organizational communication. I have learnt the importance of the subject as well as its practical usage in the business. Through this course, I have also learnt the art of professional communication. The correct use of vocabulary is very important in organizational communication. It is important to maintain a polite, humble and professional tone through organizational communications to make sure that the communication takes place in an effective manner (Kramer, 2014). Organizational communication also involves grapevine communication. This is an informal source of information within the business. I have learnt about this communication, its importance as well as its relevancy through this course. We also learnt that a lot of communication in organizations happens through emails. Therefore our professor also taught us effective email writing skills, the correct usage of vocabulary in the email as well as its structure and layout. As previously mentioned I am highly assertive in my communication. I learnt that in organizations, every person needs to communicate with many people. It is hence important that I try to understand other peoples opinion and respect the same. I have realized the importance of transparent communication in the sense that if I face any issue in the business or have any particular grievance, it is important that I communicate the matter in the right time, to the right people and in the right manner. This will be beneficial in my long term career in the organization. Transparent communication with juniors, seniors and peers will also help in building positive relationships as well as will assist in avoiding conflicts. If and when a conflict occurs, it can also be effectively addressed to efficient communication among the members involved (Haslam Knippenberg, 2014). Communication within the organization will also help in understanding expectations that different people hold from each other. Honest communication will also help employees in accomplishing roles and responsibilities that are assigned to them. Moreover, communication within the business will also ensure that people working in the organization are clear about their jobs, exact roles and responsibilities that they are expected to fulfill. Today when I look back I have been a part of a lot of communications throughout my life. I am extremely sure that if I would have taken this course before, I would have addressed those communications in a more effective manner. I probably would have been more patient and polite with my tone. Similarly, I have faced various issues where I have verbally communicated important information and that has created a lot of conflict. There is no record for verbal communication and hence I have found it difficult to trace my words. I have learnt through this course that all the important communication in the organization must happen over email. This can not only help me remember what I have spoken but can also be used as documented evidence as and when required. Professional or organizational communication is very different from the communication that we have in our personal lives. The language, tone, choice of words as well as volume differ largely between the two (Ayoko, 2016). My professor have always thrown light on the matter which states that it is not what you speak rather it is how you speak that matters. Organization communication involves communicating with various kinds of people including team members, juniors, seniors as well as customers. The communication that an organization holds with its customers have a lasting impression on the customers minds. This also leads organizations in retaining or losing customers. One very important thing that I learnt through this course is that while communicating with people and especially while providing feedback, it is important to provide constructive feedback that can lead to the growth and development of an individual (Goetsch Davis, 2014). Communication also plays an important role in motivating employees. This motivation enables employees to work harder and perform better. The right communication as well as honesty in communication leads to establishment of trust which is very important within organizations. Employees who trust each other better will be in a better position to work together and achieve organizational goals (Brown, Gray, McHardy Taylor, 2015). Overall, the course has been an immense learning experience. There were various activities that were conducted and I am highly grateful for my learning. Accounting For Depreciation In Relation With Fixed Assets - Samples

Question: Discuss about the Accounting For Depreciation In Relation With Fixed Assets. Answer: This reflection essay will be based on my learning experience in relation to the accounting for depreciation in the context of fixed assets. Prior to this assessment, two research proposals have been developed in relation to this topic and with the help of various analyses, it has been evaluated that depreciation is a type of expense for the organization and this should be marked every year in the financial statements. This also helps the company to analyse the current value of the assets along with the rate of depreciation which needs to be imposed (Epstein McFarlan, 2011). Based on my experience and learning from previous assessments, I learned the significance and the necessity of depreciation in an organization. There are two types of assets current and fixed assets. Current assets are those which can be liquidated within the one year from purchase and fixed assets are those which take more than one year to be liquidated. Amongst the various measures for measuring the value of fixed assets, I have realised that conservative approach will help the organization gain the appropriate results as per the expectations. This approach provides clear and accurate information regarding estimating the value of the fixed assets (Kang Zhao, 2010). Apart from this, I also learned that these approaches are capable enough to cover all the charges in relation to all types of other expenses which would generate clear outcomes in relation to financial statements. As per my opinion, depreciation is quite a useful thing in estimating the actual life of fixed assets and i t leads to increase in the costs of those assets. Fixed assets are long-term tangible properties for organization which helps to generate revenues and to accomplishes the functionalities of organization in an appropriate manner. I realised that the concept of depreciations implemented with the view to increase fixed costs with the view to decrease the profit margin. With the help of depreciation, anticipated fixed costs are increased dramatically and organization could easily determine their profits that will also include the expenses of depreciation (Radu Marius, 2011). On the basis of topic of the research proposal "accounting for depreciation in relation with fixed assets", I have analysed that various accounting entries need to be made to charge the fixed asset as an expense at the end of its life cycle. With the help of these entries, long time usage of the fixed assets could also be reflected. Depreciation is a charge which is imposed on the fixed asset in order to analyse its expected life. For a period of time, fixed assets could be used along with gradually decreasing its value. Along with this, I also realised that on one side depreciation is being charged to record the expense against fixed asset's cost where, on the other hand, revenues are also recorded which are originated from its utilisation. In my opinion, if whole depreciation has been charged in the first year of purchase of the asset then also revenues would be originated from its usage and those will also be reflected in the financial statements of the organization. As per my lea rning experience, this will create negative impact over the financial performance of the organization because revenues and the expenses will not match for the further time period and it will be against the matching principle. Thus, I have realised that charges of depreciation need to be recorded for all the years in which fixed asset has been used for generating revenues (Christensen Nikolaev, 2013). While evaluating the previous assessments, I have realised that all these theories and concepts are just theoretical aspects which differs from the actual outcomes. Revenues cannot be generated with one asset irrespective of its nature i.e. current or fixed. Revenues are originated from the production process and this process indulges group of assets. Apart from this, I have also realised that the depreciation is an expense which is being charged against the cost of the asset in relation to the revenues. The same procedure is being followed for several years till the time, value of that particular asset becomes nil. In the absence of depreciation, whole cost of the fixed asset will be charged in the year of its purchase which will lead to decline in the rate of profits for the organization. In the year under which fixed assets have been purchased, profits of the company will be less in comparison to the past years and future years (Giarola, Shah Bezzo, 2012). Further, in the next ye ar, profits will gradually increase which will leads to mismatch concept. For adopting the principle of consistency, it is required to charge the depreciation against the cost of fixed asset in relation to maintaining the appropriate rate of profits and to show growth of the organization. With the help of this theory, organization will be able to attain its desired goals as well as organization will easily be able to attract the public for raising the capital (Kieso, Weygandt Warfield, 2010). It is necessary to evaluate the factors of depreciation as it plays crucial role in understanding both terms i.e. concept of depreciation and the significance of depreciation. Along with the factors, measures should also be evaluated which are required for evaluating the rate of depreciation which could provide maximum benefits to the organization. Following factors have been evaluated by me after analysing the above assessments: Useful life: It is the time period which a company expects that the particular asset will be useful and will provide sufficient amount of results on the basis of organizational expectations. After that time period, assets efficiency will be evaluated so that appropriate decision could be taken in relevance with the disposition of the asset or for continuing the usage of that asset. In the last year of assets life, whole remaining amount will be charged against the remaining cost of the asset (Warren Jones, 2018). Salvage value: It is the value which is obtained from selling the asset to the scrap dealer. This amount is reduced from the cost of fixed asset and then depreciation is being charged. Method of depreciation: Method of depreciation should be used on the basis of organizational accounting policies and on the basis of useful life of the asset. Accelerated method is the best approach of charging depreciation as this helps the organization to charge more rate of depreciation in the first few years in relation with decreasing the income tax in comparison to the later periods (Rambaud Richard, 2015). In my opinion, depreciation is linked to various issues such as it does not relate to the current value of the asset. Depreciation is charged on the past value of the asset in which it has been purchased irrespective of its current value. While making the companys cash flow and other financial statements, depreciation becomes the major issue. Depreciation cannot be applied to the intangible assets and for amortization is being implemented over these assets with the help of straight-line method (Feng Figliozzi, 2013). Thus, in my point of view depreciation plays crucial role in terms of maintaining the organizational profitability. Depreciation helps the organization to determine the life of asset and it is charged gradually in respect of its life period. Along with this, depreciation should be charged against the cost of the fixed asset and in the first few years of purchase of the asset, amount of depreciation should be charged more in comparison with the further years (Crosby, Devaney Nanda, 2016).
