What Do Private School Admissions Committees Look For
The private school admissions process can be quite long and taxing. Applicants and their parents must tour schools, go on interviews, take admissions tests,à and fill out applications. During the entire process, applicants and their parents often wonder what admissions committees are actually looking for. Though each school is different, there are some major criteria that admissions committees want to see in successful applicants.à Academic and Intellectual Interests For admission to the older grades (middle schoolà and high school), private school admissions committees will look at the applicantââ¬â¢s grades, but they also consider other elements of academic success and academic potential. Application sections including teacher recommendations, the students own essay, and ISEE or SSAT scoresà are all also considered in the final admission decisions. These components combined help the admission committee determine what the academic strengths of a student are, and where the student may need some extra assistance, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. Many private schools are interested in knowing where a student needs extra assistance in order to transform the learning experience. Private schools are known for helping students perform to their fullest potential. Younger Students For younger students who are applying to pre-kindergarten through fourth grade, schools may look at ERB tests, which are modified intelligence tests. Teacher recommendations are also very important for the younger students, as well as what students are like during their school visits. Admission officers may observe the child in the classroom, or ask teachers for reports on how the child behaved and if she was able to get along with other students.à In addition to the application materials mentioned previously, the admissions committee is also looking for evidence that the applicant is genuinely interested in learning, reading, and other intellectual pursuits. In the interview, they may ask the child about what he reads or what he likes to study in school. The answer is not as important as the genuine interest the child shows in learningââ¬âinside and outside of school. If the child has a compelling interest, he should be prepared to speak about it in the interview and to explain why it means something to him. Older Students Applicants to the older grades in high school or in the postgraduate yearà should show that they have taken advanced coursework in an area of interest, if available to them, and that they are committed to taking this kind of classwork at their new school.à In the instance that a student is underperforming at her current school, explanations of why are always helpful, as well as information about what the candidate needs to excel. Being able to articulate where a learning environment is lacking is helpful to admission committees. If the child is in this position, the parent might consider asking to reclassify the child, meaning repeat a grade. At a private school, this is a common request, as the often rigorous academics can be challenging for students who are underprepared. If reclassification isnt right, a parent might also inquire about academic support programs, where students work closely with a qualified educator who can help them learn how to capitalize on strengths and develop coping mechanisms and strategies for areas where they arent as strong. Extracurricular Interests Applicants to older grades should show interest in an activity outside of the classroom, whether itââ¬â¢s sports, music, drama, publications, or another activity. They should research what the options to participate in this activity are at the school they are applying to, and they should be prepared to speak about this interest in the interview and how they will further it. Its also OK to be unsure about what the student wants to try, as a private school is a great way to get involved in new activities and sports. Students will be expected to get involved in something other than traditional academics, so the desire to be a part of a team or group is crucial. This does not mean that parents should run out and sign their child up for numerous activities. In fact, some private schools are wary of candidates who are overinvolved and overscheduled. Committee members are likely to ask: Will they be able to handle the rigors of private school? Will they be constantly late for school, leave early, or take excessive time off because of other commitments?à Character and Maturity Schools are looking for students who are going to be positive members of the private school community.à Admission committees want students who are openminded, curious, and caring.à Private schools often pride themselves on having supportive, inclusive communities, and they want students who will contribute.à Boarding schoolsà are particularly looking for a high level of independence or desire to become more independent, as students are expected to be responsible for themselves at school. Maturity comes into play when students can articulate a desire to improve, grow, and be involved at school. This is important for admission committees to see. If the child doesnt want to be at the school, committee members typically dont want the child, either. In addition, admissions committees mayà look for evidence of the studentââ¬â¢s having participated in public service, but this isnt a requirement for most schools. The committee also looks at teacher comments to ensure that the applicant is the type of student who works well with classmates and teachers. Students can also show maturity through holding positions of leadership at their current schools or by leading extracurricular activities, sports teams, or community service programs. Fit With the School Admissions committees look for students who are a good fit. They want to accept kids who will do well at the school and who will find it easy to fit in with the school culture. For example, they are more likely to accept applicants who know about the school, its mission, its classes, and its offerings. They are less likely to accept a student who doesnââ¬â¢t know much about the school or who isnââ¬â¢t interested in the schoolââ¬â¢s mission. For example, if the school is a single-sex school, the admissions committee is looking for students who are knowledgeable about single-sex schools because they are more likely to be interested in having this type of education. Some schools readily accept applicants who have siblings at the school, as these applicants and their families already know a lot about the school and are committed to its culture and goals. An educational consultant can help the applicant and his family understand which schools might fit the student best, or applicants can look over a school during the tour and interview to get a better sense of whether it is right for them. Supportive Parents Parents can actually have an impact on their childs candidacy at a private school. Many schools will interview the parents, as they want to get to know them. Admissions committees will likely ask: Are you going to be involved in your childs education and be a partner with the school?Will you be supportive of your student, but also supportive in terms of enforcing the expectations of the school? Some schools have denied students who are perfectly qualified to attend but whose parents are concerning. Overinvolved parents, parents who feel entitled or, on the flip side, parents who are removed and not supportive of their children can be negative influences on the school community. Teachers have demanding jobs already, and parents who may pose a concern for the school by being needy or demanding can result in a student being rejected for admission.à Genuine Candidates Private schools do not want a perfect mold of the ideal student. They want real students who bring with them a wealth of interests, perspectives, opinions, and cultures. Private schools want people who are involved, real, and authentic. If a childs application and interview are too perfect, it could raise a red flag that makes the committee question if she is truly the individual being presented to the school. Parents should not coach their child to be perfect or hide facts about himself or his family that could affect his ability to be successful in school. If a parent knows that a child struggles in an area, they should not hide it. In fact, many private schools offer programs aimed at supporting students in need of assistance, so being open and honest can benefit the child and help a parent find the right school. Presenting a false representation of the child could result in the school being unable to serve her needs, meaning that the child is at a disadvantage. It could also mean that the offer of acceptance would be rescinded for the coming year, or worse, the child may be asked to leave before the end of the current school year, forfeit tuition payments, and possibly pay the remainder of tuition for the year. Honesty is always the best policy here.

Answer: Group communication Group communication refers to any kind of interpersonal communication that takes place among a group of 3 or more people. We all come across group communications very frequently in our personal as well as professional lives. Group communication is highly important as it brings about effective coordination in a group as well as leads to a transparent flow of information (Brink Costigan, 2015). During all my previous experiences in group communication, I noticed various conflicts. These conflicts occur because different people come together to work. This course has been an immense learning experience for me. I have understood the importance of being patient and allowing everyone to participate rather than simply being concerned with my personal point of view. I have always had strong opinions on subjects and issues. Therefore I tend to become aggressive during group communications. I have also been given the feedback that I dont allow everyone to speak but continue to focus on my point. Through this course, I have learnt that I must change this habit and become more polite yet assertive. Respect for other team members is very important in a group communication (Karanges, Johnston, Beatson Lings, 2015). I have also learnt that communication can be a onetime event but what is important is to build a deep and meaningful relationship with the people while communicating with them. This will also ensure that conflicts are also being resolved patiently and effectively. When I begin my career in any organization, I am sure I will face various opportunities and situations which would require me to work with different teams. I am sure my learnings from this course will help me in my professional life by improving my communication skills. Group communication is also very important to ensure that organizational tasks assigned to the group are achieved more effectively. If the group does not communicate effectively, then it will be difficult for them to work together. This will not only impact their performance but will also adversely impact the organizational culture and environment. Group communications can often lead to conflicts. This is predominantly because every group communication requires an honest communication and an equal participation from all the group members. It is imperative that all the important information is circulated to every person in the group. Therefore the means of communication must be mutually decided. I also learnt that people of a group must encourage everyone to have an equal participation in the group. People in a group must make sure that they use simple language and vocabulary that is understandable to all. The group should also follow an open feedback mechanism where every person in the group can provide an honest feedback to any person from the group. Everyone must also be encouraged to take these feedbacks constructively. When I look back, I have been a part of various group communications. Today, I am sure that if I were a part of any group communication, I would learn from my experiences of the past and ensure that my communications are more effective and transparent. I will also be a lot more patient and listen carefully to other team members with due respect for their opinions and point of views. Now when I engage in group communications with my friends I try to apply my learnings from this course. I also try to be better prepared for a communication by having enough subject knowledge. I also have one question about the course. There are few people who by nature extremely introvert. They may have brilliant insights but they often shy away from communicating. How can I encourage them to speak and make them feel comfortable to speak in a group? Overall my experience in this course has been that of immense learning and growth and I am sure that the lessons from this course will continue to help and guide me through my future endeavors. Organizational communication Organizational communication involves any kind of communication that takes place within the organization. This is important to all organizations. Organizational communications is effectively used to transfer information throughout the business, manage employee relationships, set organizational goals, convey organizational duties responsibilities and provide feedback to employees (Shockley-Zalabak, 2014). Organizational communication plays a very important role in managing organizational conflicts as well as ensuring the right expectation setting between the employee and the employer. Through this course I have learnt a lot of things about organizational communication. I have learnt the importance of the subject as well as its practical usage in the business. Through this course, I have also learnt the art of professional communication. The correct use of vocabulary is very important in organizational communication. It is important to maintain a polite, humble and professional tone through organizational communications to make sure that the communication takes place in an effective manner (Kramer, 2014). Organizational communication also involves grapevine communication. This is an informal source of information within the business. I have learnt about this communication, its importance as well as its relevancy through this course. We also learnt that a lot of communication in organizations happens through emails. Therefore our professor also taught us effective email writing skills, the correct usage of vocabulary in the email as well as its structure and layout. As previously mentioned I am highly assertive in my communication. I learnt that in organizations, every person needs to communicate with many people. It is hence important that I try to understand other peoples opinion and respect the same. I have realized the importance of transparent communication in the sense that if I face any issue in the business or have any particular grievance, it is important that I communicate the matter in the right time, to the right people and in the right manner. This will be beneficial in my long term career in the organization. Transparent communication with juniors, seniors and peers will also help in building positive relationships as well as will assist in avoiding conflicts. If and when a conflict occurs, it can also be effectively addressed to efficient communication among the members involved (Haslam Knippenberg, 2014). Communication within the organization will also help in understanding expectations that different people hold from each other. Honest communication will also help employees in accomplishing roles and responsibilities that are assigned to them. Moreover, communication within the business will also ensure that people working in the organization are clear about their jobs, exact roles and responsibilities that they are expected to fulfill. Today when I look back I have been a part of a lot of communications throughout my life. I am extremely sure that if I would have taken this course before, I would have addressed those communications in a more effective manner. I probably would have been more patient and polite with my tone. Similarly, I have faced various issues where I have verbally communicated important information and that has created a lot of conflict. There is no record for verbal communication and hence I have found it difficult to trace my words. I have learnt through this course that all the important communication in the organization must happen over email. This can not only help me remember what I have spoken but can also be used as documented evidence as and when required. Professional or organizational communication is very different from the communication that we have in our personal lives. The language, tone, choice of words as well as volume differ largely between the two (Ayoko, 2016). My professor have always thrown light on the matter which states that it is not what you speak rather it is how you speak that matters. Organization communication involves communicating with various kinds of people including team members, juniors, seniors as well as customers. The communication that an organization holds with its customers have a lasting impression on the customers minds. This also leads organizations in retaining or losing customers. One very important thing that I learnt through this course is that while communicating with people and especially while providing feedback, it is important to provide constructive feedback that can lead to the growth and development of an individual (Goetsch Davis, 2014). Communication also plays an important role in motivating employees. This motivation enables employees to work harder and perform better. The right communication as well as honesty in communication leads to establishment of trust which is very important within organizations. Overall, the course has been an immense learning experience. There were various activities that were conducted and I am highly grateful for my learning. Accounting For Depreciation In Relation With Fixed Assets - Samples
Question: Discuss about the Accounting For Depreciation In Relation With Fixed Assets. Answer: This reflection essay will be based on my learning experience in relation to the accounting for depreciation in the context of fixed assets. Prior to this assessment, two research proposals have been developed in relation to this topic and with the help of various analyses, it has been evaluated that depreciation is a type of expense for the organization and this should be marked every year in the financial statements. This also helps the company to analyse the current value of the assets along with the rate of depreciation which needs to be imposed (Epstein McFarlan, 2011). Based on my experience and learning from previous assessments, I learned the significance and the necessity of depreciation in an organization. There are two types of assets current and fixed assets. Current assets are those which can be liquidated within the one year from purchase and fixed assets are those which take more than one year to be liquidated. Amongst the various measures for measuring the value of fixed assets, I have realised that conservative approach will help the organization gain the appropriate results as per the expectations. This approach provides clear and accurate information regarding estimating the value of the fixed assets (Kang Zhao, 2010). Apart from this, I also learned that these approaches are capable enough to cover all the charges in relation to all types of other expenses which would generate clear outcomes in relation to financial statements. As per my opinion, depreciation is quite a useful thing in estimating the actual life of fixed assets and i t leads to increase in the costs of those assets. Fixed assets are long-term tangible properties for organization which helps to generate revenues and to accomplishes the functionalities of organization in an appropriate manner. I realised that the concept of depreciations implemented with the view to increase fixed costs with the view to decrease the profit margin. With the help of depreciation, anticipated fixed costs are increased dramatically and organization could easily determine their profits that will also include the expenses of depreciation (Radu Marius, 2011). On the basis of topic of the research proposal "accounting for depreciation in relation with fixed assets", I have analysed that various accounting entries need to be made to charge the fixed asset as an expense at the end of its life cycle. With the help of these entries, long time usage of the fixed assets could also be reflected. Depreciation is a charge which is imposed on the fixed asset in order to analyse its expected life. For a period of time, fixed assets could be used along with gradually decreasing its value. Along with this, I also realised that on one side depreciation is being charged to record the expense against fixed asset's cost where, on the other hand, revenues are also recorded which are originated from its utilisation. In my opinion, if whole depreciation has been charged in the first year of purchase of the asset then also revenues would be originated from its usage and those will also be reflected in the financial statements of the organization. As per my lea rning experience, this will create negative impact over the financial performance of the organization because revenues and the expenses will not match for the further time period and it will be against the matching principle. Thus, I have realised that charges of depreciation need to be recorded for all the years in which fixed asset has been used for generating revenues (Christensen Nikolaev, 2013). While evaluating the previous assessments, I have realised that all these theories and concepts are just theoretical aspects which differs from the actual outcomes. Revenues cannot be generated with one asset irrespective of its nature i.e. current or fixed. Revenues are originated from the production process and this process indulges group of assets. Apart from this, I have also realised that the depreciation is an expense which is being charged against the cost of the asset in relation to the revenues. The same procedure is being followed for several years till the time, value of that particular asset becomes nil. In the absence of depreciation, whole cost of the fixed asset will be charged in the year of its purchase which will lead to decline in the rate of profits for the organization. In the year under which fixed assets have been purchased, profits of the company will be less in comparison to the past years and future years (Giarola, Shah Bezzo, 2012). Further, in the next ye ar, profits will gradually increase which will leads to mismatch concept. For adopting the principle of consistency, it is required to charge the depreciation against the cost of fixed asset in relation to maintaining the appropriate rate of profits and to show growth of the organization. With the help of this theory, organization will be able to attain its desired goals as well as organization will easily be able to attract the public for raising the capital (Kieso, Weygandt Warfield, 2010). It is necessary to evaluate the factors of depreciation as it plays crucial role in understanding both terms i.e. concept of depreciation and the significance of depreciation. Along with the factors, measures should also be evaluated which are required for evaluating the rate of depreciation which could provide maximum benefits to the organization. Following factors have been evaluated by me after analysing the above assessments: Useful life: It is the time period which a company expects that the particular asset will be useful and will provide sufficient amount of results on the basis of organizational expectations. After that time period, assets efficiency will be evaluated so that appropriate decision could be taken in relevance with the disposition of the asset or for continuing the usage of that asset. In the last year of assets life, whole remaining amount will be charged against the remaining cost of the asset (Warren Jones, 2018). Salvage value: It is the value which is obtained from selling the asset to the scrap dealer. This amount is reduced from the cost of fixed asset and then depreciation is being charged. Method of depreciation: Method of depreciation should be used on the basis of organizational accounting policies and on the basis of useful life of the asset. Accelerated method is the best approach of charging depreciation as this helps the organization to charge more rate of depreciation in the first few years in relation with decreasing the income tax in comparison to the later periods (Rambaud Richard, 2015). In my opinion, depreciation is linked to various issues such as it does not relate to the current value of the asset. Depreciation is charged on the past value of the asset in which it has been purchased irrespective of its current value. While making the companys cash flow and other financial statements, depreciation becomes the major issue. Depreciation cannot be applied to the intangible assets and for amortization is being implemented over these assets with the help of straight-line method (Feng Figliozzi, 2013). Thus, in my point of view depreciation plays crucial role in terms of maintaining the organizational profitability. Animal farm By. George Orwell Characters: The main characters in Animal Farm were Napoleon, Snowball, Boxer, Clover, Jones, and Squealer. Most of the main characters are animals, excluding the only human, Jones. Jones was the owner of Manor Farm. He was constantly drunk. His physical appearance wasn't really described in the novel, but I picture Jones as a tall, slim fellow. He might have a slight pouch (possibly due to his alcohol addiction). He really doesn't seem to care about his animals, and continually continues to abuse them. He thinks it's the end of the world whenever something goes wrong. Napoleon is the bad pig of the story. He was a rather large Buckshire boar .He wasn't much of a talker, but had a reputation for getting his way. He is very selfish, and most of thee time could care less about the others. Many of the other animals were afraid of him. Napoleon knew he had control of the other animals because of this reason. Snowball was a more viscous pig than Napoleon. He was quicker in speech, but was not considered to have the same depth of character. Squealer was the best known out of all the pigs with round cheeks, twinkling eyes, nimble movements and a shrill voice. He was a brilliant talker. When he was arguing he had a way of skipping from side to side and whisking his tail which was somehow very persuasive. The other animals said that he could turn black into white. Boxer is an enormous beast. Nearly eighteen hands high, and as strong as two ordinary horses put together. A whit strip down his nose gave him a stupid appearance, and a fact he wasn't a first-rate intelligence, but he was universally respected for his steadiness of character and tremendous powers of work. Clover was a stout motherly mare approaching middle life. She never quite got he figure back after having her forth foul. She was very smart and still beautiful. Story Tone: The tone of the story was different in every chapter. In some chapters animals were killed or slaughtered by their own kind. Many chapters were brief and boring. My favorite tone is when they go on rampage against the original owners. That's only because those parts are really exciting. The overall tone of the story is medium. Some parts are exciting and there are some slow and boring parts along with it. Setting: The setting is the most important part. The animals are all fighting for the setting. The want the farm don't they? It wasn't a backround to the plot though. The farmhouses and the barns and storage areas all add up to parts of the story coming out of their hiding places. It sort of opens up other parts of the novel. The Plot: After the old Mayer died the animals planned a rebellion against the humans, partly because of Jones's drinking problem. They thought they could take care of them selves with the knowledge of the pigs. Napoleon soon started to control the animals with the power of his looks and with his nine snarling dogs. He soon started to take whole farm over. Then they named it animal farm. They believed in the saying, ?Four legs good, two legs bad?. Before long the animals soon realized that the pigs weren't any different then the humans. They were secretly talking and making friends with the humans. The pigs broke the rules and regulations. At the end the pigs joined powers with their prime enemies, humans. You could no longer tell pig from man. Life was worst than before with Jones. Theme: The theme of the novel is you can think that you have it bad until you decide a new way out. That way can lead to a worst life and you can be stuck there thinking of how much better your life had been before. People or animals won't be who you think they are anymore. Your best friend could be you worst enemy the minute you leave the room. The point is you should leave your life they way it is. Wait for it to get better. However, if the argument is followed to its logical conclusions it will imply actions be banned based on the rate of death. In such a situation texting and driving would not be the only thing banned, even driving itself would be outlawed given its high death toll even in the absence of distractions. Bearing in mind that texting has become almost second nature to most people, it begs the question whether people should be encouraged to avoid driving and texting or trained on how to do both. Quizzed on the effects of this, proponents of this debate assert that they did not find texting while driving to be a significant risk; some are of the opinion that texting is no more different from using GPRS to check for directions (Stephens). The American federal and state laws have tried to limit mobile phone activity while driving, and this has included banns or limitations from calling or texting while driving. However, it is notable that the matter is no t unequivocally agreed on since not every state has banns on texting or calling while driving. Thirty nine states have banned texting and driving while five have outlawed the same for novice drivers; school bus drivers in 19 states are not allowed to make phone calls, only in three states are they forbidden to text while driving; Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas (ââ¬Å"Cellphone and texting lawsâ⬠). In year 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration realized that the number of Americans texting or otherwise manipulating cellphones and driving had risen to 0.9 percent (ââ¬Å"Driver Electronic Device Use in 2010â⬠). Majority of those who text while driving, fall in the teenage and young driver bracket, and they are likely to do more than just text since with smart phones they can access Facebook and other social networking sites which may be more involving than texting. Gattaca Defying All The Premises Philosophy Essay Imagine a society where everyone is more intelligent and healthier than you. Imagine a society where your genetic makeup-engineered or natural-determines the job for which you are eligible, whether or not you can be insured, and who associates with you. Gattaca by Andrew Niccol tells the story of Vincent, a young man naturally and traditionally engendered in a world where genetic engineering is the followed pattern to have a child. Few minutes after his birth, Vincents fate is revealed through a DNA analysis. His first genetic test revealed high probabilities of hyperactivity, sight troubles and serious heart diseases, a life expectancy of 30 years and 2 months and quite low intellectual faculties. At that time, the artificial insemination of test tube babies selected according to their genetic potential had become for many people the natural way of making children. But Vincents parents had preferred to let the other nature take its course. Of course they regretted it, and for their next child they went to see a geneticist. A perfect son has been born to them, a son who deserved to be called Anton, like his father. While Vincent was forced by his genetic code and the system to study at home, Anton was taller and better at anything than his elder brother. They used to play at softy. The game consisted of swimming in the sea as far as possible and being the last to make an about-turn. Vincent was always the softy. But besides his weak health, he had a very strong will. His lifelong dream was to join Gattaca, probably the most prestigious company on earth whose activity was to explore galaxies, and go into space. To achieve his aim, he did not stop studying during his whole adolescence, despite his fathers discouragements. The film shows a world where life is highly determined by genetics, and happiness is mostly based on the quality of the genetic profile, a kind of identity card for people. Vincent, who wants to become an astronaut and work for Gattaca, overcome s all the difficulties presented to him defying all the premises of the genetic engineering. However, it is not so clear that only free will is which will lead him to his dream; that significant amount of determination has to do with his success. At a time when we read about cloned sheep and the unraveling of the human genome, the science in Gattaca is theoretically possible. In the futuristic world of Gattaca, society has developed the technology to manipulate human procreation and designed children with impeccable genetic compositions. I suspect most people will order up the make and model they wanted rather than take chances on a throw of the genetic dice. Everyone will live longer and healthier in the Gattaca world. As a result, a new social caste system is created in which the artificially created, genetically superior humans called valids, dominate all major aspects of society. In contrast, the naturally born humans, called invalids, become a mistreated minority. Although all aspects of society are affected by the new genetic technology, the greatest impact is on the job market. As a result, the easiest way to analyze the job market is to compare the occupations of the valids and to the occupations of the invalids. Vali ds are instantly granted powerful, high-paying jobs, regardless of their training or background. For example, when applying for a job at the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation, Vincent, under an alternate identity, is only required to provide a blood test before he is hired and prepped for flight missions into space. Valids also tend to have computer-based jobs so that they make full use of their genetic intelligence. Invalids are only allowed to have demeaning, low-paying jobs. For instance, before assuming an alternate identity, Vincent is only allowed to work at the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation as a cleaner. In addition, invalids are forced to take jobs in which they perform manual labor. I think the Gattaca world is a realistic future even though it might face a lot of social and ethical problems. Firstly we are getting to the technology that is needed for the level of genetic engineering in Gattaca. Human Genome project begun formally in 1990, the U.S. Human Genome Project was a 13-year effort coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. The project originally was planned to last 15 years, but rapid technological advances accelerated the completion date to 2003. The goals were to identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA, determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA and store this information in databases. The knowledge about the effects of DNA variations among individuals can lead to revolutionary new ways to diagnose, treat, and someday prevent the thousands of disorders that affect us. However there are many social and ethical problems that human might face on the way to Genetic engineering in Gattaca. Firstly people were taking other peoples DNA without that persons consent in Gattaca, and this could also happen in reality too. Just like what Vincent said in the movie Of course, its illegal to discriminate. But no one takes the law seriously. People were unable to choose their own destiny. You would never be able to hope or dream of anything because your life is already planned out for you. If its not a part of your life plan, then that would be something you dealt with. Invalids were being discriminated against. According to the Nuremberg Code, which is a set of ethical rules a doctor or scientist must follow when experimenting on a human, it states that The voluntary consent of the human subject is absolutely essential (Nuremberg Code, 1949). In Gattaca, when applying for a job, the interviewer often takes saliva or a sample of urine from the interviewee without telling him/her why. Normally, if a person says no, after the interview, the interviewer would simply take DNA from a handshake, the doorknob, or even the seat without the interviewees permission. This is serious violations of the free will and rights of human beings. Secondly, discriminations could be anywhere. In the movie, people can actually choose the traits and gender of the child. This can cause a lot of problem: e.g. in China most people want boys rather than girls because people think boys could do more labor works than girls and boys can pass down their family name. As a result, the male-female ratio of world population could change drastically. The discrimination against in-valid in the movie could happen in reality too. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has duties to the community which allow the free and full development of a persons personality. Vincent has the right to express himself, which he is unable to do because he would never be allowed to because of his heart disease. Furthermore, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that in the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due to recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just society (Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948). Vincent worked really hard and strived to become an astronaut but was held back because he wasnt perfect enough. This article is saying that a person should be allowed to express oneself as long as it is legal and not disturbing the public order or general order or general welfare of others. Vincent becoming an astronaut wouldnt affect any of these, he cannot even get a chance to try in the Gattacan world. All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection to the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in viol ation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The invalids were treated inhumanely, as if they were all criminals. Discriminations problems can be one of the biggest concerns of most people if Gattaca world becomes real. Thirdly if everybody uses genetic engineering, people would have a longer life span. Earth may face an energy crisis and cause the extinction of human beings. Another problem might come from different religions, a lot of people believe in natural process too. Furthermore this is not something that could be undone easily, once people start using genetic engineering, they will just rely on it. Fortunately, most of the problems I came out with were considered by experts from the Human Genome Project. One of the main goals of the Human Genome Project is to address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project. (Human Genome Project 2003) The whole project has nine princ iples: 1. Fairness in the use of genetic information; 2. Privacy and confidentiality; 3. Psychological impact and stigmatization; 4. Reproductive issues; 5. Clinical issues; 6. Uncertainties; 7. Conceptual and philosophical implications; 8. Health and environmental issues; 9. Commercialization of products. Those nine principles can ensure everyone that the problems happened in the movie Gattaca will not occur in reality. I think there is a bright future for Human Genome Project as long as the nine principles are followed. I really enjoyed Gattaca. It raises some very good points that question the uses of technology in the not so distant future. The use of genetic research has led to humanity bio-engineering children to be free of defects and disabilities. Furthermore, I feel really pleased for Vincent as he mixes with members of the valid world despite his own in-Valid condition, he manages to gain considerable respect and admiration because of his persistence, even from people unaware of his status as a genetic impostor. Although Vincent is at the lower end of the genetic hierarchy, it is due to his ferocious determination and unquenchable desire that he is able to rise above his colleagues and achieve his dreams. It is these qualities that deem the central protagonist unique in the world of Gattaca. In the end, this movie also made me question where we should draw the line between science and ethics.

My Mother When I was young, I drew a picture of my mother. It was her standing in a yard with a house in the background. It wasn't our house, and my mother looked like anyone but herself. Dressed entirely in green, with green hair and a green expression on her green face, she stood in front of a green two-story house surrounded by a green landscape. Green was her favorite color, and I wanted to make a surprise out of the drawing for her. My mother was a god to me in those days, and in my eyes she could do no wrong. I think she understood this, and in turn she lavished attention on me like I was a princess in my own little world whose wishes were to be carried out no matter the cost. We were close, too, and not a day went by when I did not divulge some sort of secret knowledge to my mom. My mother was a game show contestant also, answering countless questions with the infinite patience that only an experienced mom can possess. Her prize for a satisfying answer was a flash of comprehension in my tiny, bright eyes and a hesitant "Oh" as I caught on. It seemed to make my mother just as happy to pass on the age-old knowledge of why the sky is blue as it made me to learn of it. My undying love for her at that age seemed to motivate her to new heights of mom-hood, as she constantly fought battles of her own with my father (who she divorced when I was four), and with her own shortcomings. I also remember my mother as beautiful. She had dark hair-the kind you run your fingers through just to feel how soft it is-and it always smel... ...; I like to believe that I've accepted my self-induced isolation from her with grace, but I must admit that I do hold the hope of bridging the gap between my mother and I. I also hold the hope of amending myself for all the times I've knowingly and purposefully hurt her. Although she is not a god, as I originally assumed, she is a good woman. She has raised me, sheltered me, and loved me for over seventeen years without asking for more than casual chores in return. I believe that the greatest compliment I could ever give my mother is to grow up to be exactly what she wants me to be. I want to make her happy. My gift to her will be my success in life, so that when she's old and gray, and she's knitting me a hideous sweater in her creaky rocking chair, she can sigh, and mumble to herself, "Wow, it was worth it."

A&P Character Analysis
In the short story, ââ¬Å"A & P,â⬠John Updikeââ¬â¢s character, Sammy, is a clerk at the A&P supermarket. His thoughts, language, and attitude throughout the story indicate he is a narrow-minded, cynical, typical teenager with a strong curiosity in the opposite sex and an extreme sense of detail. The A&P store is located right in the middle of a smaller type town, where everyone knew one another. He interprets one customer as being old, dull and unable to relate to young people only because the customer was elderly, is an example of being cynical. Sammyââ¬â¢s intensive opinions and interpretations proved his lack of knowledge outside the small town. For example, he is disrespectful in his thoughts towards the ââ¬Å"A & Pâ⬠customers, seeing them as ââ¬Å"sheepâ⬠and ââ¬Å"houseslaves. â⬠This is the part that it becomes obvious that he does not care about the customers and is unhappy at his job. Sammyââ¬â¢s aspiration for Queenie, which begins simply as a young manââ¬â¢s attention in a pretty girl, ends up being why Sammy stood up to his boss and quit ââ¬Å"A & Pâ⬠. Sammyââ¬â¢s unhappiness with his job is shown throughout the whole story with his negative comments about the different people walking through the store. Sammy spoke of his manager having a very fine sense of observation, noting the manager didnââ¬â¢t like the way Sammy smiled. As the girls were leaving the store, Sammy had a vision of how happy he would be to be able to leave the store with them. Thinking quickly, Sammy decided to tell his boss he quit, saying in a loud like voice, hoping to be loud enough for the girls to hear him. After Sammy had said the words I quit there was no way to take back what he had said, it was a done deal, and he couldnââ¬â¢t back out from quitting now. Sammy quickly folded his apron laying it on the counter. Walking out to the parking lot, only to find the girls were gone. His effort of trying to be a hero to the girls by standing up to his boss was not a success. There here stood, in the parking lot, looking in the store window, wondering to himself if he had just made the right choice.

Music File-Sharing- Right or Wrong? To file share or not to file share? That is the question. Should free music off the internet be legal? Who is in the right- Napster or the music industry? There are some of the topics I hoped to discuss when I invited four journalists to my house to debate the controversial issue of online music. Ding-dong! ââ¬Å"Uh-ohâ⬠, I think, wiping my hands on a paper towel. ââ¬Å"They must be here early.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s six-thirty, my guests arenââ¬â¢t due to arrive until seven, and I am already a half-hour behind. The lobsters are still boiling on the stove, the chunky potatoes are rock-hard and my spinach salad lies in pieces all over the kitchen floor. Things arenââ¬â¢t off to such a good start. I am supposed to be hosting a small, informal discussion tonight with a few journalists. The topic of the forum concerns the recent legal uproar about online music organizations such as Napster, Morpheus and Kazaa. I have invited a variety of people; some of whom have clashing opinions. I am looking forward to a heated and intellectual discussion; which will be good because I am planning on writing a book on the subject of online music. I havenââ¬â¢t decided yet whose side I am on; the music industry or the internet music providers. Hopefully, tonightââ¬â¢s discussion will provide me with some insight as to which side to stand on. Or maybe, I wonââ¬â¢t have to choose a sideâ⬠¦who knows? As I walk to the front door, I canââ¬â¢t help but feel just a little bit anxious, but excited at the same time. ââ¬Å"I wonder who it isâ⬠¦who had the nerve to be fifteen minutes early?â⬠I think to myself. I open the great oak door to find Tobey Grumet, a journalist from Popular Mechanics magazine. ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢s it going?â⬠he asks casually as he ... ... on the issue of online file-sharing. Each of them had to take an opinion on the subject because it is part of their job. And, for the most part, I donââ¬â¢t believe there was any kind of prior incentive to their taking one side or the other. Each of them has an extensive technological background and I think they looked at the issue pretty objectively. I learned a lot about online music from this project. I never realized what an important part of the technology community it plays. It is fun to download free music, rate it, and perhaps even discuss it with fellow music lovers. And it is convenient and thrifty to be able to check out albums before you decide to buy them. My final decision is that online music is a positive aspect of the internet that I hope, somehow, will continue to remain free and entertain music lovers through the means of the internet.

Throughout The Lie of the Land, Haydn Middleton creates "David's Story" through a series of biblical references. These references allow for the speculation of David Nennius as the son of God. This speculation comes about as a result of the rape of his mother by a stranger, the figure of God. Through the use of these references, Middleton allows the reader to see the obvious correlation between the conception and birth of David Nennius, and that of Jesus Christ. Mary is described as "bookish and dried-up," a virgin unscathed by the touch of another male (Middleton 71). Mary returns home one day to find an intruder. "She never worked out exactly how the intruder had got in. He took her arm from behind, quite gently (72)." Though the presence of an intruder, would certainly be enough to strike any woman with certain fear, Mary is seemingly unafraid, almost as if there is something about the presence of this man which comforts her in a way in which words could not express. Throughout his presence, Mary remains unafraid, "it was as if the hideous fact of his presence was shedding its own brilliant light (72)." The use of "brilliant light" suggests the presence of a divine being, almost as if a halo of light is surrounding him as that which surrounds God. Though the actual conception of Jesus did not occur on a physical level in the story set forth by the Bible, Middleton insists on displaying the creation of Jesus through the actual sexual acts of two people. This is interesting from the standpoint that the intruder, though depicted as a powerful and gentle being, is never seen through the eyes of Mary as particularly strong. She speaks of the "weakness" behind his smile; a weakness which overcomes any male when faced with the prospect of sexually satisfying a woman (74). God is, in a sense depicted as having the weaknesses of a normal, immortal male. Like any man, he too has yearned for what only a woman could give him. This becomes the weakness which is so apparent to Mary at the time of conception. ââ¬ÅPrincess Paradoxââ¬Â by James Poniewozik Essay
In the ââ¬Å"Princess Paradoxâ⬠James Poniewozik starts out his article by taking a stance against the princess movement, but then throughout the rest of his article he talks about how the movement is good for young girls by showing that they can control their own destiny. Unlike the ââ¬Å"Princess Paradoxâ⬠, Peggy Orensteinââ¬â¢s article ââ¬Å"Cinderella and Princess Cultureâ⬠takes a stance against the princess movement by stating that the movement is ruining the minds of young girls. Although both authors have feminist points of view, they have opposite opinions on how the princess movement affect young girls, which they try to prove by using different approaches to prove what their opinion is. In their opening paragraphs both authors take a stance against the princess movement. Poniewozik starts out his article by saying that it is a recurring nightmare of high-minded modern parents of daughters, where the parents give many masculine toys, and then when Halloween rolls around they want to be a princesses; (666) while Orenstein writes her article from the perspective of a parent whose daughter was called a princess and treated as a princess everywhere she went, and Orensteinââ¬â¢s tolerance of this treatment grew shorter until she lost her patience. Though Poniewozik seems to take a stance against the movement in his opening paragraph he ends up leaning towards why it is a good thing for young girls, whereas Orenstein keeps her opinion the same, but she goes on to contradict the point that she was trying to make. Both authors compare todays princess movement with the feminist movement that took place a few years ago. Weââ¬â¢ve come a long way, it seems, from the girls-kick-ass culture of just a few years ago in which a 360 [degrees] flying roundhouse kick was a girlââ¬â¢s best friend. (Poniewozik 666) Poniewozik says that todayââ¬â¢s Prince Charming has learned the lessons of feminism, or at least learned to pay lip service to them. (666-667) Orenstein on the other hand sees the princess movement as an anti-feminist movement, which she tries to support at first, but then she begins to contradict herself by saying that the princess movement may be a sign of progress, and that atà long last girls can have it all. (671) The approach to the princess movement that both authors take is completely different from the other. Poniewozik uses the princess related movies for his approach, showing how they fit in the theme that the girl can have it all, while at the same time they can keep the feministic way, while Orenstein pulls all her information from the Disneyââ¬â¢s Princesses. She takes her approach by claiming that the princess movement was started when Disney put nine of its female characters together and started to sell the princess movement to the public. Poniewozik keeps his claim that the princess movement is good for young girls throughout his article which he tries to prove by using more opinion than fact. Orenstein started her article with the point of view that the princess movement is ruining young girls, but about half way through the article she states that she might be wrong. Where Poniewozik fails to give good facts to support his claim Orenstein seems to make up for when she goes on to give facts and evidence which disproves her own theory, but supports Poniewozikââ¬â¢s. Poniewozikââ¬â¢s proof of his theory is rather hollow, but is more filled if you add in the facts and information from Orensteinââ¬â¢s article. On the other hand Orenstein lacks proof to prove her stand against the princess movement and to prove how she could be right. Most of the information that she tries to use to back up her theory is formed from her opinion, which makes the proof for her theory rather hollow. Poniewozik talks about how the princess movies show what a princess should be like and that there is a strict set of rules and conventions; she should be pretty, but in a class president way, not a head cheerleader way, she should be able to stand up for herself, she must be socially conscious, and above all she should not want to be a princess until she changes her mind that is. (668 Poniewozik) Orenstein says similar things such as girls feel like they have to follow a certain set of rules to be accepted; school-age girls overwhelmingly reported a paralyzing pressure to be ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠: not only to get straight Aââ¬â¢s and be the student-body president, editor of the newspaper and captain of the swim team, but also to be ââ¬Å"kind and caring,â⬠ââ¬Å"pleaseà everyone, be very thin and dress right.â⬠(673) Orenstein found that Disneyââ¬â¢s secret to selling their princess products was that all they had to do is think like a little girl would about princess items. Such as, what type of bed would they want, what type of alarm clock would they want to wake up to, and what type of TV would they like to watch, and etc. Few girls will completely bedeck their room, but if she ends up with three or four of these items, well you have a healthy business. (673 Orenstein) Poniewozik found a similar occurrence with princess movies. He says that Hollywood is discovering that it still does not pay to fight the royal urge. (Poniewozik 666) Following 2001ââ¬â¢s $108 million-grossing _The Princess Diaries,_ Hollywood waved its wand and conjured a set of Cinderella stories for girls, including The Prince and Me and Ella Enchanted, as well as A Cinderella Story and its sequel. (Poniewozik 666) Both authors stated their claims and presented their evidence, they both have opposite views, but yet the evidence is similar in many ways. Although both authors have feminist points of view, they have opposite opinions on how the princess movement affect young girls, which they try to prove by using different approaches to prove what their opinion is. Poniewozikââ¬â¢s argument was proven with some facts he had, while Orenstein did not support her argument very well and only helped make Poniewozikââ¬â¢s argument better, and to disprove her own. Ancient Egyptian Cuisine and Food Habits Among the ancient civilizations, Egyptians enjoyed better foods than most did, thanks to the presence of the Nile River flowing through most of settledà Egypt, fertilizing the land with periodic flooding and providing a source of water for irrigating crops and watering livestock. The proximity of Egypt to the Middle East made trade easy, and hence Egypt enjoyed foodstuffs from foreign countries as well, and their cuisine was heavily influenced by outside eating habits.à The diet of the ancient Egyptians depended on their social position and wealth. Tomb paintings, medical treatises, and archaeology reveal a variety of foods. Peasants and slaves would, of course, eat a limited diet, including the staples of bread and beer, complemented by dates, vegetables, and pickled and salted fish, but the wealthy had a much larger range to choose from. For wealthy Egyptians, available food choices were easily as broad as they are for many people in the modern world.à Grains Barley, spelt,à or emmer wheat provided the basic material for bread, which was leavened by sourdough or yeast. Grains were mashed and fermented for beer, which was not so much a recreational drink as a means of creating a safe beverage from river waters that were not always clean. Ancient Egyptians consumed a great deal of beer, mostly brewed from barley.à The annual flooding of plains alongside the Nile and other rivers made the soils quite fertile for growing grain crops, and the rivers themselves were channeled with irrigation ditches to water crops and sustain domestic animals. In ancient times, the Nile River Valley, especially the upper delta region, was by no means a desert landscape.à Wine Grapes were grown for wine. Grape cultivation was adopted from other parts of the Mediterranean in about 3,000 BCE, with Egyptians modifying practices to their local climate. Shade structures were commonly used, for example, to protect grapes from the intense Egyptian sun. Ancient Egyptian wines were primarily reds and were probably used mostly for ceremonial purposes for the upper classes. Scenes carved in ancient pyramids and temples show scenes of wine-making. For common people, beer was a more typical drink.à Fruit and Vegetables Vegetables cultivated and consumed by ancient Egyptians included onions, leeks, garlic, and lettuce. Legumes included lupines, chickpeas, broad beans, and lentils. Fruit included melon, fig, date, palm coconut, apple, and pomegranate. The carob was used medicinally and, perhaps, for food. Animal Protein Animal protein was a less common food for ancient Egyptians than it is for most modern consumers. Hunting was somewhat rare, though it was pursued by commoners for sustenance and by the wealthy for sport.à Domesticated animals, including oxen, sheep, goats, and swine, provided dairy products, meat, and by-products, with blood from sacrificial animals used for blood sausages, and beef and pork fat used for cooking. Pigs, sheep, and goats provided most meat consumed; beef was considerably more expensive and was consumed by commoners only for celebratory or ritual meals. Beef was eaten more regularly by royalty.à Fish caught in the Nile River provided an important source of protein for poor people and was eaten less frequently by the wealthy, who had greater access to domesticated pigs, sheep, and goats.à There is also evidence the poorer Egyptians consumed rodents, such as mice and hedgehogs, in recipes calling for them to be baked. Geese, ducks, quail, pigeons, and pelicans were available as fowl, and their eggs were also eaten. Goose fat was also used for cooking. Chickens, however, seem to have not been present in ancient Egypt until the 4th or 5th centuries BCE.à Oils and Spices Oil was derived from ben-nuts. There were also sesame, linseed and castor oils.
